When an office building in Hatton Garden asked us to freshen up the timber decking in its inner atrium, the space had quietly lost its shine. Shaded and enclosed, the decking had built up a slippery film of algae, mould, and grime that made the courtyard look tired and, more worryingly, left it slippery underfoot. Our Method: Light Solution Plus Low-Pressure Steam
Our approach paired a light deck cleaning solution with low-pressure steam cleaning. It is controlled, low-mess, and safe for both the timber and the surrounding space.
The job ran in clear stages:
- Survey and test. We checked the timber type and condition, then tested a small area to confirm the gentlest effective treatment.
- Protect the surroundings. We covered nearby planting, glass, and furniture so the working office stayed clean and undisturbed.
- Apply a light deck cleaning solution. A gentle, biodegradable solution was worked into the timber to break down the algae, mould, and greasy film.
- Allow dwell time. We let the solution do the hard work, loosening the grime at the root rather than just on the surface.
- Low-pressure steam clean. Using heat rather than force, the steam lifted the dirt and killed off the spores that cause regrowth, all without hammering the wood.
- Rinse, check, and dry. We cleared the residue, inspected every board, and left the deck to dry to a clean, even finish.

The Result: A Safe, Bright, Welcoming Atrium
The change was immediate. The black film lifted away, the timber brightened back to its natural tone, and the slippery patches were gone.
For the office, the win was twofold. The atrium looked cared for again, which matters in a client-facing space. Just as importantly, the decking was safe underfoot once more. All of this was achieved with minimal disruption, so staff could keep using the building throughout.
